Marlon Holiday ResortRay and Rose Walker, with son Andrew, invited Dot and I to spend a weekend at Marlon Holiday Resort on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast recently. No second invites were needed, it was full steam ahead and we got there at a rate of knots, not even the MSC Opera could get up!

Ray and Rose have only had Marlon for three years now, and were joined by their son, Andrew two years ago. Andrew is responsible for all the maintenance and repairs, Rose for the bookings, advertising and admin, and Ray, as a “Master Mariner” and having spent most of his life skippering ocean going liners, (similar to the MSC Opera!) is responsible for the smooth sailing of the resort!

I have known and camped many times at Marlon overMarlon Holiday Resort the past fifteen to twenty years, and wow! A “Real class act” has been put together with the resort in a spotless ‘ship shape’ and immaculate condition.

During my weekend stay at Marlon, the Motor Home Club of South Africa – KwaZulu-Natal region were there for the weekend as well. I know and have met most of the members over the years, and over the weekend, they all vouched for and commented on the improvements that Ray and his complement of landlubbers, stevedores and buccaneers have accomplished in these past three years.

The Motor Home Club, as well as numerous other caravan and camping clubs camp regularly at Marlon. When caravan and camping clubs and the Motor Home Club use a resort regularly for their monthly venue, a lot can be said of the resort or caravan park. Marlon is no exception

Marlon Holiday Resort is without a doubt an orderly, trim and well spruced caravanning and camping destination, which oozes with élan and panache.

The ablution facilities are spotless with piping hot water at all times, well lit and ventilated. There are also two family bathrooms which are proving extremely popular for families with small children. The sites are large and well decked with excellent grass cover, water points and well appointed electrical outlets, and with easy berthing, I mean easy access to each site.
 A large games room, sparkling swimmingMarlon Holiday Resort pool with kiddies pool, children’s play park, trampoline, pool table and table tennis, darts and a large screen TV with three DSTV channels to choose from. This will ensure that every member of the family is kept on board at all times. Marlon also has a huge lapa and braai area, not to forget “Skipper Rays” Snack Shack. (I believe the skipper has a good chief-cook-and-bottle-wash on board as well!) All the basic essentials are also available at the galley: Ice, charcoal, briquettes, wood, cold drinks and sweets is always in stock. Not to forget to mention Buccaneer Andrews’ “slap chips”, the best chips you will ever get stuck into – if he does not chop them off first “me hearty”! “Finger licking good” will never be the same again – either way!

Marlon Holiday ResortMarlon Holiday Resort is very well sheltered from the elements, set in a subtropical environment with abundant shade, and with the beach only 700 meters away (just a 10minute stroll to the beach) with tidal pool, safe bathing with life guards on duty, and great rock and surf fishing, Marlon definitely stands up to their slogan: “Your Favourite Family Resort!”

For the birders, there have been 119 species of bird life recorded! This is an amazing amount of bird life in an area! Birders – have an aerie good time! Just do not go overboard: spot the feathered species of birds, not the bikini species! Remember: ornithology is the study of the fathered species, where bird watching of the bikini species refers to the swimsuit the “bikini” because of its revealing style that creates reactions among people similar to those created by America’s atomic bomb dropped over Japan. Birders please do not bluff, or the captain will throw you overboard!

More of a serious note: Rose tells me that there is still a few sites available for the forthcoming December holiday period, so if you are looking for an exciting venue, with a becalmed atmosphere, with total tranquillity and a resort where you can heave-to and relax without a care in this world, Marlon is definitely for you.
